To Uşak and back

Today is the big day: we visit the humidor maker Ömer Tomruk in his manufactory in Uşak. Again I realize how huge Turkey is. The landscape is mountainous, and once the urbanized areas are behind us, it gets really beautiful. In the area around Uşak there are long and really deep canyons. The town itself an important location for textile, leather and ceramics and has been home to Ömer Tomruk's manufactory for several years.

He went from an amateur humidor builder to a professional manufacturer of custom-made - especially - cabinet humidors in a short time. There will be a story about him in Cigar Journal 3/2022, so I'll just tell you this much here: custom work at its finest with great attention to detail and the customer gets all technically possible wishes fulfilled.

We chat about details for the future story, Ercan translates, we smoke good cigars and then go out to eat together.

And we continue towards Pamukkale, through a wonderful landscape, where I am fascinated by wide flower fields with white flowers: cotton, as Manuela explains to me later.

When we arrive shortly before sunset (this is the best time there, just as a tip, should you ever go there) in the ancient bathing city in Pamukkale, just the last buses depart from this tourist highlight and this magical place empties.

A strong but warm wind blows around our ears and at the extreme point of these bizarre limestone terraces we are almost alone. The light, the wind, the architecture of nature and the friends who are with me make me very very happy.

After this experience, which should not be missed on a trip to Turkey, even if you are no longer allowed to bathe in the natural thermal pools as in the past, we rush through the night, back to the hotel in Selcuk. We have done 650 kilometers and experienced a lot and seen beautiful things. After a good Shiluh Kustan wine (you have to try it, it has an amber color and tastes great!), a snack and a cigar, I fall into bed - very grateful for everything I can experience.

Pamukkale, meaning "cotton castle" in Turkish, is a natural site in Denizli Province in southwestern Turkey. The area is famous for a carbonate mineral left by the flowing of thermal spring water. It is located in Turkey's Inner Aegean region, in the River Menderes valley, which has a temperate climate for most of the year.

Also worth seeing in the same area is the ancient city Hierapolis.
